Save New Gourna

New Gourna village , Hassan Fathy’s pilot-project, is at present abandoned and in danger. Although the theater and the mosque have been restored, many buildings are uncared for, others have been brutally altered and others yet, such as the boys’ school and the village handcrafts’ hall, have purely and simply been torn down.Therefore, SAVE THE HERITAGE OF HASSAN FATHY took the initiative of a demand for international registration of New Gourna as a Docomomo listed heritage ( See Docomomo International article).
Two registration demands to classify New Gourna as a National Heritage have also been submitted to the Pharaonic Antiquities Committee and to the Coptic and Islamic Antiquities Committee.

Chère Leila, Bon courage avec New Gurna, Ca fait des dizaines d'années qu'il y a des initiatives de sauver ce village. Je dois être membre de plusieurs initiatives de ce genre. Mon équipe et moi ont fait des découvertes intéressantes cet automne sur le site de la nécropole dite fatimide à Assouan. Un site que Hassan Fathy aimait beaucoup. (...) I think the following questions should be addressed very carefully: 1) What is the significance of New Gourna? 2) For whom is New Gourna significant? 3)What went wrong? or what are the threats that faced and are facing New Gourna? 4) What should/can be don? are we talking about: - physical conservation of what remains from the village; or - conservation of the philosophy and attitudes of Hassan Fathy; or - conservation of the "Cultural Landscape" of the West Bank of Luxor and maybe beyond (the Nile Valley?)

Bonjour tout le monde, Je voudrai d’abord féliciter les membres de l’association pour cette initiative ambitieuse. Je vous souhaite beaucoup de courage et persévérance. Je vis en Egypte depuis 6 ans, et je deviens une grande admirative de l’architecte Hassan Fathy et son vocabulaire d’architecture humaine et communautaire. Dans cette phase de ma thèse de doctorat, je traite quelques exemples d’architecture flexible, évolutive dans les pays arabes et je voudrai savoir si ces aspects sont présents/introduits dans l’architecture de Hassan Fathy. Merci First, I would like to congratulate the association members for this ambitious initiative. I wish you a lot of courage and perseverance. I live in Egypt since 6 years, and I become a big admirer of the great architect Hassan Fathy and his human and Community architectural vocabulary. In this stage of my PhD thesis, I’m analyzing some flexible and evolving architectural examples in the Arab countries and I would like to know if this aspect is introduced into Hassan Fathy’s architecture.
