Save the Heritage of Hassan Fathy association is extremely alerted by the collapse of one of the vaults of New Gourna's Khan. Hassan Fathy had planned the khan with workshops for craftsmen and a vaulted gallery for them to expose and sell their crafts.

The Khan is one of the main buildings of New Gourna village, which has suffered severe deterioration during the past years mainly due to neglect. After its first assessment mission in January 2009, Save the Heritage of Hassan Fathy had already called for urgent measures for conserving and restoring the Khan, one of the most severely damaged public buildings of the site. This degradation represents a terrible threat as it could lead to the collapse of the entire gallery.

Despite the recent UNESCO scientific mission in October 2010, the degradation of New Gourna village is ongoing and the damage on this arcade is a visible sign of the threats that menace the whole site.

Save the heritage of Hassan Fathy calls for urgent measures to save and restore the Khan, one of the most outstanding buildings of Hassan Fathy's New Gourna village.

All the members agreed on the importance and urgency in restoring the core of Hassan Fathy's village. Several scenarios for the restoration and rehabilitation have been discussed for the first between international and Egyptian experts and the Egyptian authorities. This Committee marks the beginning of a long process which should include the considerations of the inhabitants of New Gourna and define architectural and restoration measures adapted to the exceptionality of this world famous example of appropriate technology.

New Gourna

Save the heritage of Hassan Fathy has been informed that the governorate of the West Bank in Luxor is planning to sell agricultural land beside New Gourna village in order to build a hotel "inspired" by Hassan Fathy.
The building of a new tourism complex is being projected while New Gourna village has just been examined by UNESCO for protection and listed on the World Monuments Watch List.
Thus Save the heritage of Hassan Fathy is concerned by the legitimacy of such a project in this area.
Not only does it raise the question of threats on the already very fragile state of New Gourna village but also of its adaptability to the environment and the surrounding landscape...
Moreover, why should such a project be implemented on agricultural land?

As you all know, since the past two years, SAVE THE HERITAGE OF HASSAN FATHY has concentrated all its efforts in the safeguarding of the endangered village of New Gourna by carrying out the following actions:

- Alerting the
international community as well as the Egyptian authorities

- Demands for inscription as a protected heritage
(National, World Monuments Watch, UNESCO World Heritage Centre)

- Publication of various articles (Docomomo Review etc.)

- Organizing an international Expertise mission to New Gourna (January 2009) - Expertise report on the State of conservation

- Participating in the First Mediterranean Conference on Earth Architecture (Cagliari 13-16 March 2009)

- Initiating an international petition for the safeguarding of New Gourna

- Participating in the Hassan Fathy Symposium at the Biblioteca Alexandrina (Alexandria, 28 octobre 2009)

Fortunately all these endeavors have led to the following results:

- The Inscription of New Gourna on the World Monuments Watch List

- A UNESCO expertise mission on site to evaluate the possibilities of a restoration project (this coming December)

If New Gourna village was to be considered by UNESCO World Heritage Centre as part of the World Heritage site of Thebes, this would insure the protection of this outstanding cultural heritage.

The Association is extremely pleased with these positive outcomes which will hopefully put an end to the degradation process and damages which New Gourna has been suffering for the past decades.

However, our mission is more than ever ongoing! Indeed, if New Gourna was the first step in safeguarding the heritage of Hassan Fathy, many of Hassan Fathy's remaining works are today severly endangered and SAVE THE HERITAGE OF HASSAN FATHY shall pursue its efforts to protect the heritage of this remarkable architect.

A few months ago, following its international mission in New Gourna (January 2009),
Save the Heritage of Hassan Fathy jointly with CRATerre - ENSAG made a proposal to List New Gourna village on the World Monuments Watch 2010.

This listing is a very important step towards the conservation and rehabilitation of New Gourna village and the Association is thrilled by this News.
